Props

From looking at a few music videos for my task one research I saw they used alcohol and smoking props. So I decided to imitate and replicate that idea to use in my actual own music video so we could get the whole hood rap atmosphere.

So when I shoot the artist will have these props in a few shots so it gives that hood effect for the music video.

Production crew

For the music video I would need a director, cameraman, and editor. Before I start to record I will direct everyone and tell them what to do. Then I will record in my 3 different locations. Once I get my all footage I will then go on to start editing it.

Resources/Equipment

The pieces of equipment I will need is a camera DSLR, gimbal and led lighting. The editing software that I will use is adobe premiere pro or either final cut pro.

Video style

Conventions and techniques I will use are stalking which is using the gimbal to track and follow the artist. This technique makes the music video into a sort of storytelling movie because its narrative. The change of locations will make the video more interesting and links with the song because the locations are nice, calm and grimey places.

The things you would typically see in a music video would be boys and girls. Different locations, everyone wearing casual party clothes and alcohol bottles and cups. In my music video I am going to have some of the same typical conventions such as the change of location, casual party clothes, alcohol bottles and cups. I believe these are all the conventions of a good music video.

Evaluation

Evaluation

To start off originally I was going to shoot a music video for my friend Georgina who goes to my college. During the filming process I learnt that my artist wasn’t really serious so I knew I had to take actions and take action. It was very beneficial that I had a plan b and plan c, my plan b was an artist called “Young Pulse” who is also my friend and lives in the same area as me. So instead of doing the song “Come & See me” – By Georgina, I ended up shooting the “Young Pulse x Jigga – Deeper than rap” Music video. At the end all of this was worth it because it turned out to be very successful because the audience loved the music video, the two artists loved it and also my teacher Amy liked it and said it is looking Distinction level.
I am good friends with the artist so working with him was fun and professional at the same time. To be honest in the first place I wanted to make a rap music video and not a singing one because I am more used to hood rap videos and have more knowledge about them as I always watch rap music videos on YouTube from my favourite artists. Furthermore I knew all the conventions of a rap music video such as alcohol, smoking props, hooded clothing’s on artists, group of people, grime effects. So I used my knowledge and imagination to make my hood rap music video.

I met the artist’s needs by complying with his choices of locations and cutaway shots. This was particular easy because I used cutaways shots of the blocks and shots in Leytonstone where the artist is from. This was good because it shows the artists hometown and relates to some of the lyrics.

Meeting the audience’s needs was also meeting my needs as I am part of the audience too. I am 17, based in east London, I listen to music all the time and generally like listening to grime/hood music. These were all elements of my target audience. Most of the viewers that watched my music video were the target audience I targeted which was aged 17-25.

When researching my case studies I did a lot of research into hood grime music videos. For example the music video I researched was “Big Tobz – Uno My Style” and in this music video it had the typical conventions of a hood/grime music video such a girls, hooded clothing and alcohol. This was helpful because it gave me some what of on insight into the conventions of a grime rap music video, the style of music video and different type of shots (i.e. close up, long-shot and mid-close up), different type of speed shots and cutaways.
I researched into the audience of my case studies which was exactly the same audience that I targeted. For my primary research, the target audience for that video “Big Tobz – Uno my style” had a primary target audience which was 13-25 based in East London and their hobby is listening to grime music.  The artist often puts a few videos of his fans (on twitter) listening to his music, the fans are all aged 13-25 years old.

When it came to filming, it took me 2 different days to get all the footage that I needed. The first day I filmed all the verses in the 3 different locations (Wanstead flats blocks, Cathall underway bridge and inside the car), I also shot some of the cutaways that day. I needed about 1/2 more cutaways so the following day I got the rest of the cutaways I needed. I enjoyed filming especially filming to a genre that I like.

Editing was really fun and I was creative when it came to editing. I used my imaginations to add all these elements into the music video such as speeded shots, slow-mo shots, effects and cutaways. Which are some of the conventions of a rap music video. Editing my music video was particularly quick, I finished the whole music video within 3-4 days. Whereas the class took a couple of weeks. I think enjoyed editing better than filming. In rap videos you always see a variety of different shots such as close ups, long shots and medium shots. Since I wanted my video to be a typical rap music video I decided to have those typical shots and also added some own of my own shots.
There wasn’t any individual roles at all. I decided from the start to be by myself and shoot and edit the whole music video by myself. I like being independent and believe I work much harder and better by myself. Furthermore I was the director, I was the cameraman, I was the editor. In other words I literally did everything by myself. I very much enjoyed this unit, this unit is probably one of my best units so far.

Overall this unit was educational, fun and professional to sum it up. There is nothing I think I could improve. Nor is there anything I would change. I feel that I did my absolute best as I put a lot of effort into this unit. It was smart that I had a Plan B, which actually fell through and became my final outcome video.

Pitch

The artist of my music video will be Georgina, an original song from herself and someone that used to go our college before called Tim. The track name is called “Love and Affection” by Georgina ft Tim.

I am making the music video to portray the message and meaning in the song. So the message in this song is

My final video idea is the main artist Georgina is walking as she tells the story which is about 2 boys. The ex-boyfriend who she is now over and she has moved onto another boy. So as she singing she will be walking and I will be following her with the camera from different angles this is called tracking. The main purpose of the song and music video is the artist singing about her ex-boyfriend and her now current one.

The locations that I have now finalised are car park, a normal park and hotel-apartment.
My target audience will be aged around 13-20 years old. Both aged male and females, they’ll either be studying full time or have a full time job. Based in east London and their hobbies would probably be listening to music.

Talent

In my music video I will have the main artist, two boys. One playing the ex-boyfriend and the other playing the current boyfriend. Then I will probably have 15-20 extras both male and females. This will give a good variety in my video.

Video style

My video still will be quite bubbly and quite ghetto because these two themes suit the song. The genre of the song is R&B mixed with afro-beats.

Conventions and techniques I will use are stalking which is using the gimbal to track and follow the artist. This technique makes the music video into a sort of storytelling movie because its narrative. The change of locations will make the video more interesting and links with the song because the locations are nice, calm and summery places. The song is also a very calm and summery song.
